Rapid evolution in the lighting industry has meant major changes for light sources as new technologies have supplanted longstanding legacy sources. Luminaire design has also evolved to take advantage of the new source characteristics and form factors. In some cases, the luminaire and the light source have merged. This class will review existing legacy as well as modern LED light sources and luminaires. Participants will learn the major characteristics of modern LED light sources and luminaires and how to effectively select and specify them for projects. This class will be suitable for newer lighting practitioners including designers, contractors, architects, engineers, building operators, sales people, and those seeking to update their knowledge and skills.

Learning Goals

At the end of the class, participants will:

  • Understand the basic elements of LED Light sources.
  • Understand the basic elements of legacy Light sources.
  • Understand the basic elements of luminaires.
  • Learn tips and tricks to use in everyday practice to improve the visual quality of the built environment while minimizing energy use.
