Notable Lighting:
This $41 million dollar addition to the Charles H. Lundquist College of
Business provides a dramatic new anchor to the school's facilities. Home
of both the Warsaw Sports Marketing
Center, and the Lundquist Center
for Entrepreneurship, Lillis is a hub for exciting new ideas in the
world of business.
A LEED(TM)
project, it meets high standards for efficiency and sustainability.
Designed for learning in the 21st Century, it uses wireless technology
and flexible spaces for state-of-the-art teaching facilities. Realizing
they had huge expanses of southern exposure and glass, they integrated
photovoltaics into the atrium glazing. This is a BUSINESS school, so they
SELL excess power back to the Utility for more than they pay for it. Green
can pay off handsomely.
Visitors to Lillis
will see:
- Integrated electric
lighting and daylight using photocells and dimming
- Daylight shades
that are motorized and integrated into the control
system
- Operable windows
for fresh air intake
- Full control of
class space at the speaker's podium
- Full use of wireless
technology for student and teacher computers connection to the network
- Full integrated
video production facilities for use with narrowcast, broadcast and webcast

This building has been described as jewel-like at night, and I agree.

The Lillis Center creates a bridge connecting two older portions of the
School of Business while maintaining an open view and connection to the
inner campus.

Central Stairwell and Skylight - photo credit © 2000 - 2004 by
Charles H. Lundquist College of Business, University of Oregon. This type
of skylight is called an oculus. Professor G.Z. Brown of the University
of Oregon Department of Architecture consulted on the daylighting for
this project. Professor Brown also manages the Oregon
BetterBricks Daylighting Lab.

Atrium Glazing with Photovotaic Panels - photo credit Randal Smith,
LDL. In addition to all the PV units on the atrium glazing, there are
"acres" of PV panels on the roof. The University buys power
from EWEB at a nickel per kilowatt hour and sells it back to them from
these panels at $0.20.

Large Lecture Hall - photo credit Randal Smith LDL. When presentations
begin, the window shades close and the overhead skylights close automatically
in order to provide optimal conditions for media presentations.

Study Alcove - photo credit Randal
Smith LDL. Lillis has many alcoves like this for students and faculty
to work from their wireless devices. You may recognize LightSearch's Dave
Burtner from the New Product Showcase, or from his days as "warden"
at the Lane County Juvenile
Justice Center.
