Notable Lighting:
From all reports, the old Lane County Mental Health offices were not inspiring. But the new headquarters is a comfortable space, inviting and efficient. The high atrium fills the volume of the entry with a luminous welcome to visitors and clients, drawing people in. The electric lighting is integrated with daylight harvesting controls, dimming in response to the contribution from the skylights overhead.

The muted earthtone palette makes for a warm suite of offices and conference rooms. Depending on the exposure of the offices, there are lightshelves and exterior shading devices. These maximize the indirect lighting from the sky and minimize the direct daylight penetration.

A visitor to this project would see:

  • Energy-efficient fluorescent and ceramic metal halide
  • Photocell dimming of electric lighting in response to daylight in all perimeter locations and atrium.
  • Lightshelves and external shading devices

Lane County Mental Health Exterior - This institutional campus has crisp, clean lines with a relaxed and comforting feel.


Lobby with extensive daylighting - The entry lobby lighting integrates daylight and electric light using controls from WattStopper.


LED color changing feature in lobby - The decorative LED luminaires provide a slow color change. The gradual fades provide a calming light show for waiting clients and professionals.


Office with lightshelf
- Note that the level of daylight was so intense for the camera that we had to close the blinds to take the picture. Normally the blinds are open. Lightshelves bounce light upon the ceiling for deeper penetration into a room.


Exterior - These shading devices help control glare and the angle of penetration of direct beam illumination into the interior space.
