Need a double-half-caf-skinny-vanilla latte? Better head to the University of Oregon's latest addition, Common Grounds. Designed to compete with boutique coffee purveyors off-campus, the lighting concept for this 2000 square-foot space features non-uniform distribution to promote intimacy, while luminous glass elements introduce points of sparkle and a sense of spatial vitality. Horizontal punch, provided by recessed 37watt-IR-MR16's, illuminate the counter and table seating areas.

Ambient lighting at the cashier, entry, and several seating locations is provided by dimmable, 32-watt 3000K CFL downlights. Their suspended-glass trim rings with subtle gold patterned stippling provide a softer quality of light in several areas. Pewter reflector cones are used throughout.

Murano glass pendants are a focal point at the counter seating area and echo the jewel-tone colors of the interior. Shimmering off the copper backsplash, the Xenon under-shelf lighting emphasizes the back-bar. Fluorescent cross-baffled downlight-wallwashers behind the counter illuminate into the shelving, enhance the signage, and provide ambient work light.

With fifteen dimmable lighting zones and six available presets, the lighting can dynamically change throughout the day. Semi-recessed low-voltage downlights with poured crystal trims provide sparkle and diffuse illumination at each of two banquet seating areas.

Serving as a decorative anchor in the middle of the space, the curvilinear Austrian glass track follows the lines of the double-sided sectional sofa. Starburst patterns of light radiate from the glass track fixtures. Adding yet one more layer, MR16 pendants with frosted-glass shades provide focused light within the boundaries of the copper-clad tabletops. Anyone for more coffee?
