Awards YMCA - Valley Lighting Designer Project Owner Photography When the YMCA decided to build a new facility, the site chosen was surrounded with wild grass meadows. This drove the materials chosen for the surfaces; exposed timber trusses with wood plank ceilings. Challenging spaces in this budget-tight project included a natatorium, weight machines, and spinning area, and a causal fireside lobby. Especially in the natatorium, these materials posed a challenge. To minimize glare, and indirect lighting approach was deisred. But the low reflectance on the upper surfaces made this seem an infeasible approach. Added to that challenge was the Washington Non-Residential Energy Code, which allowed no more than 1.0W/sq.ft. Finally, the Washington Administrative Code Health Code required a minimum of 30 footcandles across the entire area. A reflective element was needed to make an indirect system work. Since the building
sat in a meadow, and was geared towards families, the design team created
custom "kites" to fly in the natatorium. These partner with
reduced jacket 1000W metal halide indirect fixtures to provide the required
lighting levels. Unique use of inexpensive cutoff fixtures inverted with
davit arms minimized glare towards 2nd floor spaces. The fixtures are
outside of the waterline for easy servicing. Indirect pendants were used
in the weight room to minimize glare for face-up exercise. The fireside
lobby was kept cozy by downlighting with tracklighting mounted on the
sides of trusses using 35WPAR38 metal halide. Playful cable lighting highlights
the donor wall. The project has been very successful with memberships
far surpassing all goals and expectations.
