Awards Sammamish Club Lighting Designer(s) Project Owner Photography Flexible lighting systems accommodate the broad range of equipment, activities and spaces in this athletic club. Three lighting scenarios are designed to provide different levels of light for this fitness studio. Fluorescent lighting resides above the undulating screens to emphasize the architectural elements of floating clouds while softening the light as it punches through the perforated metal. Maximum light levels are achieved for sports such as aerobics or kick-boxing. Low voltage MR16 track lighting rests in between the floating clouds to provide dimming functionality for medium level light activities. Individual sconces with compact fluorescent lamps introduces a residential feel to enhance activities such as yoga or pilates, while achieving energy efficiency. The central corridor reflects a mixture of direct/indirect fluorescents as well as incandescents to project continuous warmth from the lounge to the upper floors. The stairwell lighting reflects the uniqueness of the health club's architecture and design. The blue light is used to lift the staircase and elicit a floating sensation as members move from studio to studio. Visible from the outside,
the rock wall tower room is controlled by a computerized system to provide
visual interest after hours for passersby, while providing more accommodating
lighting scenes during use. Carefully designed for climbers, the rock
tower itself is lit to both avoid glare and evenly distribute the light
to eliminate distracting shadows. Lighting in the lounge creates both
a sense of drama and warmth by forming pools of light providing a calm,
visual rest for after work-out moments.
