Exterior
Architecturally echoing a Northwest Indian Longhouse, Issaquah Library utilizes timber construction and a tall central roof monitor.

Clerestory
The design intent was to enhance the architectural form and materials while providing appropriate task and ambient light.

Lobby
The narrow lobby rises to forest-like heights. LV track, concealed within side louvers, provides cross and uplight on warm wood surfaces. Integral LV track in side niches dapples light across the floor.

Front Desk
Libraries require relatively high, evenly distributed light levels for reading and glare control for computer use.

Collections
Long-term maintenance and energy efficiency priorities were challenged by the soaring ceiling.

Reference Desk
Collections lighting provides 50 footcandles ambient, mainly downlight for efficiency, with enough uplight to reveal the structure and ease contrast with the wood ceiling.

Central Area Under Monitor Roof
Cost-effective direct fluorescent pendants with parabolic louvers align with mechanical ducts, and hang at a uniform height in a pattern that avoids mounting over stacks with integral stack lights. Track mounted ceramic metal halide fixtures softly uplight the wood ceiling and supplement downlight in the central spine. All overhead lighting is within ladder reach. The 1.5w/sf energy code limit was met.

Custom Stack Lights
Custom stack lights, fluorescent strips inside cost-effective sheet metal housings, combine baffled direct and reflected light to provide even, glare-free light over the entire height of tall stacks.

Multi-Purpose Room
The same concepts provide flexible, controllable lighting in the multi-purpose room. Direct pendants and fluorescent strips in sheet metal boxes on top of the mechanical ducts provide ambient light while track mounted accent lights and recessed wallwashers provide lighting for speakers and presentation surfaces.
