Awards Maui Residence Lighting Designer(s) Richard Spry MIES
LC, Ross De Alessi Lighting Design Project Owner Photography A feeling of open space thoughout this residence is maintained as lighting supports architecture. Half walls further divide space within rooms, allowing uplighting in various forms to reflect off pink tinted ceilings. Considering heat and HVAC load, the kitchen employs double row T8 dimmable remote ballasted fluorescents with MR16 accent downlights. Custom heliconia flower sconces surround the living room. 22" tall antique bronze heliconia sconces hold quartz A lamps for dimmability and color. These augment the "spillover" from the kitchen uplighting. A close-up of the sconce reveals the use of "cracked" and re-fused glass as the luminous element. The heliconia theme continues to two guest bathrooms with custom quartz A lamp sconces and luminal valances above showers and partition walls. The valance allows concealment of low voltage, xenon strip lights for warm indirect lighting. A detail reveals the multi-faceted elements of the balance. A water-jet cut grille or heliconia fixing captures laminated art and diffuse glass layers. These are secured and fastened to the top plate with matching custom brackets. Low voltage xenon strip lights were employed due to their size, ease of dimming, warm color and ability to render the glass valance most truly. Harmony of light, fixturing and architecture reigns supreme in this tropical getaway.
