From the IIDA Award Submission Form:

Nestled against the hillside, with a drop-dead view of the Sawtooth Valley, is the Davies Residence (Fig 1) The architecture asked for rustic elegance with exposed trusses and stone clad columns (Fig 2). The scale of the home proved challenging with a great room and foyer soaring to over 30'.

While the finishes said "cabin" the clients wanted a high-tech progressive feel, appropriate for entertaining business clients. Definitely no antlers (Fig 3). Rather than hiding the source, lighting became a key design element in the interiors (Fig 4). At the entry, lighting became art.

(Fig 5) And the light became imprtant to defining the various surfaces, giving priority and sense to the large expanses. Care was taken to balance the room composition brightness for comfort and function. With expose structure and non-accessible pre-formed wood ceiling panels, recessed lighting was limited to soffits.

(Fig 6) In the great room, flexibility for varying light levels in differenct areas seemed to call for track lighting. However, the high ceilings dissuaded the use of any surface mounted equipment. Three 8-foot diameter rings were suspended at an accessible height. Mini "butterfly" accent lights provide adjustable lighting for the varying tasks. Uplihgt sconces provide ambient light. Deorative sconces bleed light onto the stone fireplace accentuating the texture. For intimate gahterings, overhead lighting can be switched off leaving only table lamps and sconces.

(Fig. 7) A sophisticated lighting control system was installed to manage the many layers of light. this provided the owners with various scenes for morning, evening entertaining (Fig. 8), casual dining, etc.

(Fig. 9) The end result is a jewel lying in the trees.
