proper disposal of lighting products containing mercury.

In mid-2000, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency changed the classification of mercury-containing lamps from "hazardous waste" to "universal waste". This is the same waste classification as batteries.

The new classification eases some requirements on larger companies, but it now has specific requirements for small businesses, called "small quantity generators", or SQGs. The following links take you to pages with specific information.

Check this page regularly, as the LDL will be updating and expanding the information as it comes to us. There will be a training session on the new rules for lighting contractors in October 2000.
